WEATHER SITUATION UPDATE FOR BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 17 DECEMBER 2023

1.General Situation:
Brunei Darussalam is currently in the Northeast Monsoon and is expected to persist until around end of March 2024. During the first two months of Northeast Monsoon (December 2023 and January 2024), also known as the rainy season, the country normally experiences unsettled weather conditions with occasional heavy showers or thundershowers especially during the night until early morning.

As of 8.00 am local time today, Sunday (17th December 2023), Tropical Storm JELAWAT was observed at coordinates 7.8°N 129.3°E, at the southeast sea of the Philippines, approximately 1600 km away from Brunei Darussalam (Figure 1). Tropical Storm JELAWAT is forecasted to move Westwards but still far from our country.

2.Brunei Darussalam Weather Situation:
Tropical Storm JELAWAT is expected to indirectly influence our weather in Brunei Darussalam. Slightly windy condition is expected in the upcoming few days, with potential gusty showers or thundershowers to occur especially at sea and coastal areas. Wind gust of up to 50 km/h is expected in or near heavy showers.
Meanwhile over the Brunei waters, generally sea condition is at slight to moderate state, with wave height of between 0.8 m and 1.6 m.

3.Our Advice:
Members of the public are advised to take precautionary actions with respect to the forecasted active weather condition. There is high risk of fallen trees and possibly landslides to occur during gusty and heavy showers conditions. Risk of flash floods may also occur especially at the low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near the river banks during continuous heavy rain and also during high tide.

Public, road users and fishermen are advised to always be up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department, and to take necessary actions to ensure safety.
