WEATHER UPDATE FOR BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 31 DECEMBER 2020

General Situation:
Brunei Darussalam is currently in the Northeast Monsoon. Unsettled weather conditions are generally expected during this period, with occasional heavy showers or thundershowers. December and January are the months that have recorded the highest number of rain days, as well as the highest amount of rainfall in comparison to the other months.

Strong surges from the Northeasterly wind that is currently over the South China Sea is expected to cause in the increase of wave height over Brunei waters.

Brunei Darussalam Weather Situation:
Weather condition over Brunei Darussalam in the next few days is expected to be influenced by local wind effects with isolated showers over the coastal areas and thundershowers over the inland areas. Wind gust may reach up to 45 km/h during thundershowers.

Brunei Darussalam Sea State:
Northeasterly wind surges over the South China Sea will result in the increase of wave height over Brunei waters. Rough sea condition is expected with wave height reaching up to 3.0 meters from this evening (Thursday, 31st December 2020) until Sunday, 03rd January 2021.

Our Advice:
Rough sea state is dangerous to all small crafts, and sea recreational activities and sports (i.e. swimming, jetskiiing, scuba diving and others). Mariners and the general public are advised to always be up to date and to take into account the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning before planning any sea recreational activity and to take precaution and necessary actions to ensure safety.

Members of the public and road users are also advised to take note of the risk of flash floods especially at low lying and flood prone areas during heavy showers or thundershowers as well as the risk of falling trees during gusty condition.

Our department shall continue to monitor the weather conditions and will issue appropriate weather advisory or warnings if and when necessary.
