Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) would like to clarify the weather phenomenon seen in
pictures and videos being viral today through social media including Whatsapp.

We would like to inform that this is a common weather phenomenon called a funnel cloud. It is a funnel-shaped
cloud of condensed water droplets, associated with a rotating column of wind and extending from the base of a
cloud (usually a cumulonimbus or towering cumulus cloud) and it does not contact with the ground. When this
weather phenomenon occurs over a water surface, it is called a water spout.

The funnel cloud is usually short-lived and is not dangerous unless it reaches ground. However, it is advisable for
the public especially mariners to keep away from the funnel cloud when it happens.

We shall continue to monitor the weather conditions and will issue weather advisories or warnings, as and when
necessary. For the latest weather update, the public may contact Duty Meteorological Forecaster at our Forecast
Office, through our Weather Line 114, or visit our website at, or follow us on social media
Facebook and Instagram (bruneiweather), and Brunei WX mobile application.

Wallahualam Bissawab.
