ONSET OF SOUTHWEST MONSOON FOR BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 30 MAY 2022

Our country is transitioning from Inter-Monsoon phase to Southwest Monsoon which is expected to start during the final week of May. The general light wind, blowing from various directions will shift to Southwest direction.

Atmospheric conditions tend to be quite stable with minimal thundershowers occurrences as compared to during the Inter-Monsoon phase in the past 2 months. Southwest Monsoon typically last until September. During the peak of the monsoon period which is around August, the country usually experiences hazy conditions due to the generally dry weather across the Southeast Asian region.

According to our climatological data, the normal rainfall amount recorded at our Observation Station at Brunei International Airport for the month of June, July and August are 237.7 mm, 241.8 mm and 231.5 mm respectively. With reference to international climate models, rainfall amount for our country for the month of June is slightly below normal, whereas for July and August will be slightly above normal.

Southwest Monsoon also coincides with the season of active development of cyclonic systems, such as tropical storms and typhoons, over the Northwest Pacific Ocean and South China Sea. When such system develops, depending on the location of the system in relation to Brunei Darussalam, our country tends to experience unsettled weather conditions with occasional gusty thunderstorms.
