MAMMA OR MAMMATUS CLOUDS OBSERVED OVER BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

20 May 2020

The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) would like to enlighten the public regarding the weather phenomenon: Mamma or Mammatus Cloud, which was observed yesterday, 19th May 2020 around 6.30 pm.

The Mammatus cloud is one of the most distinctive cloud formations with a series of bulges or pouches emerging from the base of a cloud. The shape of Mammatus formations can vary widely; from the classic protruding shape, to a more elongated tube hanging from the cloud above.

Often the case here in Brunei, Mammatus forms in association with Cumulonimbus clouds. Its occurrence is not uncommon in Brunei Darussalam since convective thunderstorm clouds, i.e. Cumulonimbus, can easily be formed during a very hot afternoon. Thus, if you see a Mammatus on a clear day, it is an indication of thunderstorms occurring nearby like yesterday.
