WEATHER UPDATE FOR BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 21 SEPTEMBER 2019

21 Sep 2019

1. General Situation:
Brunei Darussalam is currently still in the Southwest Monsoon season where the general prevailing wind is blowing from the Southwest. Southwest Monsoon also coincides with the season of active development of cyclonic systems, such as tropical storms and typhoons, over the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea. As of 3:00 pm local time today, Typhoon 'Tapah' is observed at 27.4 °N 125.5 °E over the East China Sea. The system is expected to move northward and further away from our region. Brunei Darussalam will not be affected by the typhoon system. Meanwhile, dry weather prevailed over many areas of southern ASEAN with persistent hotspots scattered around the region. Some of the smoke haze continued to be blown by the wind towards the country resulting in transboundary haze. Based on the latest numerical weather prediction models, the wind flow across Brunei Darussalam is likely to shift from Southwest to Northeast or East over the weekend and early next week.

2. Brunei Weather Situation:
The Brunei International Airport Meteorological Station has recorded horizontal visibility ranging between 3 and 6 km (compared to the horizontal visibility range of more than 10 km during fine weather situation) in the past 24 hours due to hazy weather condition. Our country will not be affected by Typhoon 'Tapah'. However, isolated showers or thundershowers are expected to occur at several areas of the country. Meanwhile, slight to moderate hazy conditions are expected to persist with chance of gradual improvement over the next few days, due to the likely change in wind direction.

3. Weather Advisory:
Members of the public are advised to be alert with the current weather situations and take necessary steps and precautions during this hazy period.
